Which is more depressing…

… seeing a poorly-formed opinion based on ignorance, or seeing a wonderfully-crafted, firmly-backed opinion that is still, nonetheless, based on ignorance? I’d almost always say the former, because the former can be dismissed as simply contributing to the signal-to-noise ratio. The latter, however, is dangerous and sad, and it’s even more depressing when it’s written by someone that you thought you respected. In this case, one of my favorite authors, Orson Scott Card.

Article 1 (1990)
Article 2 (2004)

I always knew that OSC was a Mormon (for once in my life, I’m not going to say anything at all here) but it’s really just wholly depressing to see someone use a great deal of logic to wish America back to the 1950’s.

I’m not going to argue here either, because it would take me days and a great deal of research to deal with such a well-read presentation. Also, the first article, “Hypocrites of Homosexuality,” almost perfectly covers the whole Christian point of view of homosexuality. It’s wonderfully well-written, in true OSC style, and is one of the most wholly depressing things I’ve ever read in my life.

What do you do when you see one of the people you always thought you wanted to meet write such horrific things? I’m still not sure. This issue is as divisive as any I’ve seen, and it certainly won’t end anytime soon.
