Life is randomness. Why do I say that? Because a lot of the weird stuff that’s happened to me in the last year happened because I didn’t click a button.
Some day in mid-September I was sitting in front of my computer, killing time between math class and picking up my roommate. I was driving them around because their truck was in the shop. I see a thread about ‘parody motivational posters’ – if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I thought, Despair should be pretty damn flattered right now. I am 27. My father had me when he was 43. That means my dad is now 70. He’s also the Head Duke in Charge of Stubborn Old Fucks. I don’t think he’s ever taken my advice a day in his life. Generally, he refuses to accept the fact that he is not always right. Take this, fold in the fact that my mom never forces the issue and always respects his ‘opinions,’ and then whip with his health problems, and you’ve got the recipe for danger. His health has been failing since last August, when I grudgingly returned to school (450 miles away) for fall semester. My father being my father, he hates to see doctors, so much so that he waited until his heath was so bad that he could hardly deal with life to go to the doctor. At that time, he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure; somewhat later, he was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic. Since then, his health has continued to decline, and in the last two weeks he has declined drastically. He has been getting weaker and weaker, barely able to walk the length of the house.
