Dean takes 2nd in NH

Tag: Uncategorizedmav @ 12:32 am

… and I’m sitting here wondering, “who cares?” I like Howard Dean as much as the next geek, he seems like a straightforward guy with a pretty decent set of values and a damn large following, and he can’t win a fucking primary.

So we’re boned. We’ll probably end up with Bush v. Kerry. Granted, that’s an easy call for anybody with more than 2 braincells to bang together, but it’s still the same 2 evils calling again.

In my poli-sci class we discussed several possibilities as to why voting is still around - and is still considered a core democratic value. If you don’t vote, somehow you’re a second-class citizen. Yet when you vote, you usually just end up choosing between one joker who sucks and another joker who sucks slightly less. Neither is a good candidate, or even a good compromise; but you’re stuck with them anyway. So why in the hell does society care?

One of those possibilities was that voting is a placebo - it’s the political equivalent of a pacifier, something that the government gives the people to suck on every two years so that we can feel better about being good little citizens. This opinion wasn’t particularly popular in class, but I’m thinking that it’s pretty much spot-on. I honestly can’t recall the last time a candidate that I really thought deserved to get into office actually got elected.

It’s not too surprising that an anti-business, anti-war candidate isn’t doing too well, though. Actually, the more I think about it, the more surprised I am that he made it to 2nd place.

When it rains, it floods

The good news: my car’s trouble was that the battery was dying, as I suspected, so not only was it easy to fix but it was damn cheap too. Gotta brand new Interstate(tm) Ass-kicking Battery.

The bad: While I was hooking up my KVM today, I unplugged my wireless router to move it to a different outlet and since then the damn thing has been freaking out. It’ll just lose its wireless every once in a while, if you reboot it it comes right back, but still… Shades of D-Link here.

I can’t seem to break even anymore.

The ongoing shitfest

Tag: Uncategorizedmav @ 12:44 am

The good: Dad’s home from the hospital and doing pretty good, especially considering he’s sans about 10 inches of left leg. It’s going to take him a while to acclimate but the rehab people keep saying he’s a perfect candidate for a prosthesis, and that they really want to fit him for one in a month or so when his leg finally heal. Now there’s only two hurdles: 1, getting him to use it and 2, getting Medicare to foot the bill so he can actually get one. Gaaaaaah.

And now the bad news. Because, as we know, life is just a giant puddle of shit and we’re the tadpoles.

Laugh

If you work in anyplace that has lots of emergency lighting, buy a headlamp. Wear it to work every day. Do this for a while. Get a reputation as being “the headlamp guy.” Make lots of friends, make sure everyone knows you. Wait for the power out. Bide your time. One day, the power will go out. Then you stand up, amongst the cubes, and as loud as you can, yell “MY TIME HAS COME!!” and crank up that mofo.

The Potential Story

Tag: Uncategorizedmav @ 2:28 am

Originally told here.

Life is randomness. Why do I say that? Because a lot of the weird stuff that’s happened to me in the last year happened because I didn’t click a button.

Some day in mid-September I was sitting in front of my computer, killing time between math class and picking up my roommate. I was driving them around because their truck was in the shop. I see a thread about ‘parody motivational posters’ - if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I thought, Despair should be pretty damn flattered right now. I threw this together in about five minutes:

Where we is

Tag: Uncategorizedmav @ 11:10 pm

So there are just too many variables in the equation for me to be able to figure out what in the hell is going on with this crap anymore.

My dad’s ongoing medical expenses, my suckage at higher math and difficulty with cash has led me to one inevitable conclusion: short of a minor miracle, I don’t get to go back to Moscow.

Just once, I wish I could feel confident again

Tag: Uncategorizedmav @ 12:08 am

I really miss it.

First couple of semesters at CSI, I really felt like I had some idea as to what I was doing. Now, I just feel like I’m walking around in a daze, not really knowing what I’m supposed to be doing or why I’m doing anything at all. I guess that’s what doubting your major gets you, but I seem to be doubting everything.

Bad news comes in floods, good in crumbs

Tag: Uncategorizedmav @ 5:03 am

But hey, who’s complainin’.

I posted my iBook on SA and had an offer in 15 minutes from a buyer who had impeccable ratings. 10 days later, I’ve got money and he’s got a notebook and everybody’s happy. That’s the way this is supposed to work.

And GOONCON’S IN VEGAS, BABY!
