The ITS Primer on Insulting Your Intelligence
So, I just got my reply after dancing around the “Hey, we only support the campus network, not the residence halls!” Seems the University of Idaho doesn’t support RFC 959, even though it’s about 18 years old. Yes, folks, no active FTP on the University of Idaho campus. So to add insult to injury, now they’ve cut the FTP sites I can connect to down to the bare minimum. Thanks guys, you’ve managed to basically turn learning *off* here. Assholes.
Let’s list a few others, shall we?
- No P2P. I can understand this one if they said “No P2P between 0600 and 2200.” But considering they like to go on and on about how I’m paying for this useless piece of shit connection I’ve got, how about letting me use at least a tiny bit of it? How about at least 5K/S at night?
- Shit connections in the dorms. My connection plugs directly into a 10MB HUB. Interesting security feature (that is, the ability to sit in promiscuous mode and watch all your local net traffic.) This will be fixed in the Living Learning Center, as I understand, but at present several hundred students have no port-level security.
- And the interesting last straw: No inter-campus connections are allowed. Not even ICQ. So if I want to send my friend in another building a file, I have to upload it to an external ftp server or just sneakernet the fucking thing over there. Great security guys - make us route all of our data through an outside source. Yeah, that’ll increase our security.
In summary: if you work for ITS on any decision-making level: FUCK YOU, TWICE, YOU WORTHLESS PIECE OF FLAMING MONKEY SHIT.
