The Wit and Wisdom of Telephones

Tag: Uncategorizedmav @ 1:55 pm

So, I’ve been wrangling with McLeodUSA for months over my business telephone service. They tell me one thing, they do another. It’s utterly ridiculous and I’m horribly disappointed. I’ve never seen service worse than Qwest before; in fact, I didn’t think it was possible.

Short version: Never, ever, EVER switch phone companies. Because the alternative is worse than the norm. Read on, oh weary traveler.

Seven years. Seven goddamn years

Tag: Uncategorizedmav @ 1:21 am

and here I sit, trying to come up with a list of customers for Jeff.

22 names. 22.

Seven years. 22 names. It seems to me that it should be more than that, but it isn’t.

Business owners, entrepreneurs, out of a list of three or four hundred customers, I am handing off twenty-two names to my friend Jeff. The really good customers are rarer than platinum, rarer than perfect diamonds, rarer still than perfect love. Don’t let them go unless you have to.

Something I want to get off my chest

Your link of the day:

Improv Message Boards - True Porn Clerk Stories

I honestly don’t know if this is encouraging or not, but I think you should read it. It’s rather interesting, you can read it in bites or you can just sit down and spend an hour or so reading all of it. And after reading it, I think it’s time that I come clean about a couple of things.

I have horrible taste in music and movies.

Still Fighting It

Tag: Uncategorizedmav @ 6:23 pm

Good morning, son
In twenty years from now
Maybe we’ll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you ’bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
It was pain
Sunny days and rain
I knew you’d feel the same things

Everybody knows
It sucks to grow up
And everybody does
It’s so weird to be back here.
Let me tell you what
The years go on and
We’re still fighting it, we’re still fighting it
You’ll try and try and one day you’ll fly
Away from me

– Goddamn you Ben, you’re not making this any easier.

So I wrote my farewell letter

Tag: Uncategorizedmav @ 4:37 am

to my customers and I’m having a really hard time not breaking down and bawling like a little girl.

Most of my customers aren’t customers, they’re friends that occasionally pay me. And no matter how frustrating this job gets or my customers get, I’m going to miss them.

Well, most of them.

My phone’s back!

Tag: Uncategorizedmav @ 1:50 am

Yes, my friend, my baby, my Motorola StarTAC 7797 has returned from its errant trip to the Mongolian House.

It apparently fell out of my pocket when my parents and I went out to dinner last Sunday.

We went over there tonight, and on a whim I asked them if they’d found my phone. I had already called them previously so I figured I’d have no luck.

Surprise! Yep, they found my phone. Apparently it worked its way down behind the seat and it was found almost a week later.

The creepy part: They called AT&T, since the battery was dead and that was the only logo on the phone. AT&T called Edge, and Edge left a message on my answering machine.

While we were at Mongolian House, where I asked about my phone.

Tell me it’s not a full moon.

Real goes OSS

Tag: Uncategorizedmav @ 1:43 am

Slashdot | Open Source, Real Media Mega-player?

Realplayer as open source? Yeah, right. Read the fine print. Or, rather, read Perens’ take on this issue, which, in true OSS style, is posted as a Slashdot comment by Bruce himself.

Basically? While it’s promising, it certainly isn’t the revelation that Real’s PR department would like you to believe, and in a lot of ways, it’s a giant pile of shit.

After the guys with the Armalite endorsement sweep through Microsoft Headquarters, they should take a little side-trip through Real.

I love, love, love this film.

“One of the things I think this movie says is that life isn’t tidy, and life isn’t neat, and life doesn’t follow rules, and that’s the good news. And that’s what makes life beautiful and wonderful and open and exciting and thrilling and confusing and scary and dangerous and lovely and all of those things at once.” — Gary Ross, writer/director, speaking about his movie Pleasantville

Life sucks

  • My phone is missing.
  • I spent $60 and two days of my life shuffling around my domain only to find out that I didn’t need to move it in the first place.
  • My fucking phone is missing!
  • I’m sitting here staring at the promissory note for my $7000 worth of student loans for this semester. Damn.

Oh, and if you run into problems viewing this page please let me know. I seem to be having this problem where I have to reload it twice to see any changes, and on the first reload it only shows the first couple entries. Mail me if you’re running into this, I’d like to try and track it down.
